City of Leicester Cathedral

School Trips

Home / East Midlands / Leicestershire

The Normans began the construction of the original church around 900 years ago. It was rebuilt and enlarged between the 13th and 15th centuries and became the 'Civic Church' with strong links with the merchants and guilds (with the Guildhall being located nearby). Just over 100 years ago the Victorian Architect, Raphael Brandon magnificantly restored and, in places, rebuilt the church, including the addition of a 220ft spire. When the Diocese of Leicester was reestablished in 1927 the church was hallowed as Leicester Cathedral.

Why book City of Leicester Cathedral for School Trips and Educational Visits?

trip icon

Education at Leicester Cathedral is a living framework through which we continue to build relationships with schools and other educational organisations in the City, County and further a-field. More than 2,000 students visit the Cathedral each year.

We deliver a programme of visits which support the curriculum, RE in particular, through which we share aspects of the Christian faith and the cathedral in an age and ability appropriate way. We provide opportunities for participants to gain an insight into the life, key beliefs and experiences of Christian people in worship, ministry and community, based at a Christian place of worship and engagement.

Do you offer access for visitors with disabilities?

We welcome children with a range of special needs - physical, learning, emotional, sensory. Please alert us when you book and we will discuss how we can make the visit most effective. There is a wheelchair ramp at the entrance (Vaughan Porch) of the cathedral. Further ramps are situated around the building to allow access to the different floor levels of the North Transcept and St. Dunstans Chapel
