Suffragettes Workshop

The Drama Hut

School Workshop Online Workshop

trip icon DEEDS NOT WORDS! The Suffragette movement has been formed and the members are working tirelessly to secure equal rights and the vote for women. Led by Sylvia Pankhurst, we take you back to 1912 where Sylvia is due to speak at a Rally and this is where we need your help! During the workshop, the children will learn about the origins of the Suffragist and Suffragette movement, explore opposition to the movement and what was done to counter this. Working as a team we will create a timeline of relevant events that led women to get the vote, learn a song sung at Suffragette gatherings and of course attend a rally, where we will sing, chant, march and generally join in the good fight!

What activities are available during this school workshop?

Which curriculum topics do we cater for?

green tick Performing Arts

Our workshops include tailored, fully interactive, drama games, role play, teamwork exercises, songs, movement and more, led by a professional costumed actor.

green tick Victorian

Suffragettes

We will explore elements of what it was like to live during the Victorian Era, especially as a Suffragist from the 1890s and debate the changes brought about by The Industrial Revolution and what Queen Victoria thought about Women's Rights!

green tick Edwardian

We explore the tough opposition that was encountered within suffrage societies fighting for equal rights and in particular, women's right's surrounding the vote during this period. We look at the NUWSS Suffragist movement from the 1890s throughout to the Suffragette Movement starting in 1903 to 1928 and beyond.

green tick World War

WWI had a huge impact on the suffragette movement and the success in women's fight to get the vote. We explore this in detail and look at Women's roles during WWI.

green tick Twentieth Century

Women securing the vote in 1928 was a very important and significant moment in 20th century history. The long and at times, relentless journey to get there is explored in detail during this workshop.

green tick Significant Individuals from History

During this workshop we look at important influential figures during the 1890s-1979 that helped, hindered or impacted on the fight to secure equal rights and the vote for women.

What size groups do we cater for?

We typically run 60-120 minute workshops with up to 30 children at any one time and can offer special day rates for multiple classes. We are also able to provide two different topics on the same day for different year groups.

How does safeguarding work for online workshops?

Online sessions are jointly hosted by the teacher and our actor and may or may not be recorded, depending on the preference of the school. Ideally workshops take place in a school hall with a large screen, however, they can also work extremely well in a classroom, with desks pushed aside. Our Risk Assessment document is available upon request and is updated regularly to comply with all current advice and guidelines.

What technology/devices/type of internet connection do schools need for an online workshop?

Online workshops are delivered live by professional actors and typically last 60-75 minutes each. They are structured in the same way as an on-site visit and have the advantage of utilising the benefits of technology – in particular, virtual backgrounds, enabling actors to transport children back in time, to any era or location. School will require a good internet connection and ideally a large screen to project our actor on to, so all the children have good visibility.

Access for visitors with disabilities

Yes - the very nature of our workshops being so visual and experiential, has led to extremely positive feedback from teachers.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Yes - children with special educational needs really benefit and enjoy our workshops.

Testimonial:

This workshop was absolutely excellent, I couldn’t recommend it enough. The actor brought the story of the suffragettes to life in a way which was immersive and fun, but also had really clear learning outcomes. Our students ended up using the call and response (oh dear, what could the matter be…) and the deeds not words chant in their final performance on the Friday. It was clear that the messages had really sunk in and had a profound effect on the children. The actor was so energetic and delivered every section so smoothly. She also did a great job of navigating anachronistic or silly answers from students while staying in character. Thank you so much!
