Great Explorers-Christopher Columbus and Amelia Earhart

School Workshops - The Drama Hut

Home / School Workshops

At The Drama Hut, we believe that schools should have ready access to drama in order to support learning. The Drama Hut was created in order to provide an affordable on-site service that teachers could access, to help bring the curriculum to life. Through drama, children are able to experience a subject, complementing and enhancing their learning in the classroom.
With over two hundred schools visited last year, we are passionate about the impact that drama within schools, can have on children’s education.

All our team are professional actors, trained both in facilitation and performance. They have experience working with children of all ages and share a common passion through learning through drama. All facilitators are DBS checked and implement The Drama Hut CPP (Child Protection Policy).
All we require prior to our visit is a clear space to work in and a member of staff to observe or join in the experience.

Curriculum topics available: Superheroes.

In this workshop our professional actor will take on the roles of two great explorers. Travelling back in time at first with with Christopher Columbus to 1492 on a journey across the seas where he unknowingly discovered the Americas and then Amelia Earhart who will share her passion as the first female pilot to fly across the Atlantic ocean. During this workshop the children will create pictures to understand a little bit about the time each explorer lived in, improvise Christopher Columbus’s first voyage and perform a poem about his life. They will then meet Amelia Earhart and learn about her passion for flying creating their own flying machine and finish by creating a timeline to celebrate great explorers placing them in historical context.

Our activities allow children to truly experience a subject and our consistent feedback from teachers is that they return to their classroom enthused to develop their understanding of the topic in more depth as a result.

green tick Twentieth Century

Amelia Earhart was an important figure in 20th Century history, breaking down gender barriers and proving the world was a place to be explored not just by men but by all. This fits well into many school topics covering diversity as well as our Suffragette and Mary Seacole workshop.

“We have used The Drama Hut on several occasions to help enrich and inspire the children’s experience of the curriculum. All facilitators have been well prepared and able to use their dramatic skills to deliver well-pitched and interesting workshops. Children are always excited after the session and are able to speak confidently about what they have learnt.”
