Great Explorers-Christopher Columbus and Amelia Earhart
School Workshops - The Drama Hut
At The Drama Hut, we believe that schools should have ready access to drama in order to support learning. The Drama Hut was created in order to provide an affordable on-site service that teachers could access, to help bring the curriculum to life. Through drama, children are able to experience a subject, complementing and enhancing their learning in the classroom.
All our team are trained both in facilitation and performance. They have experience working with children of all ages and share a common passion through learning through drama. All facilitators are DBS checked and implement The Drama Hut CPP (Child Protection Policy).
Why book The Drama Hut for educational workshops into your school?
During this workshop the children get to:
-Create pictures to understand a little bit about the time each explorer lived in.
-Through improvisation bring to life Christopher Columbus’s first voyage.
-Perform a poem about Columbus’s life with song, action, sound and movement.
-Meet Amelia Earhart, learn about her passion for flying and create your own flying machine!
-Create a timeline to place our explorers in historical context.
Which Curriculum Subjects do you cater for?
Curriculum topics available: Superheroes.
Through drama the children will get the opportunity to truly experience a subject which will have cross curricular benefits. Being encouraged to use their imagination, the children will feel more confident in relaying what they have learnt back in the classroom, whether it be through storytelling or essay format.
Our activities allow children to truly experience a subject and our consistent feedback from teachers is that they return to their classroom enthused to develop their understanding of the topic in more depth as a result.
Amelia Earhart was an important figure in 20th Century history, breaking down gender barriers and proving the world was a place to be explored not just by men but by all. This fits well into many school topics covering diversity as well as our Suffragette and Mary Seacole workshop.
What activities are available during group visits?
We cover a wide range of topics from the school curriculum and use drama-based activities to bring the subject to life. Here is a selection of the topics we cover: Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Mayans, Romans, Stone Age, Saxon and Viking, Victorians, WW1, WW2, Great Fire of London Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Great Explorers. We can also provide bespoke workshops at schools requests.
What size groups do you cater for?
We can work with up to 30 children at any one time for a minimum of 60 minutes. We offer special day rates for multiple classes and can deliver two different topics to different year groups on the same day, helping to manage tight school budgets.
Do you offer on-site classroom facilities?
All we require on the day is the school hall or similar to work in and a member of staff to observe the session/s.
Is there first aid on site?
Do you cater for visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
“We have used The Drama Hut on several occasions to help enrich and inspire the children’s experience of the curriculum. All facilitators have been well prepared and able to use their dramatic skills to deliver well-pitched and interesting workshops. Children are always excited after the session and are able to speak confidently about what they have learnt.”
