Forensic Sciences (KS3/4)
Click to read full text Hayley educates the students on forensic science, sharing all her training, knowledge, experience and age appropriate anecdotes from her time working for the Metropolitan Police in London as a Crime Scene Investigator (Forensic Practitioner). This is carried out by presentations and practical experiments, using the same equipment used by Hayley as a CSI. These include taking and coding their own fingerprints, searching for characteristics and delta's. Then the students will examine an age appropriate crime scene (burglary for primary age children, a murder for secondary school age children using a realistic silicone body made at a famous film studios). During this activity the students will examine the crime scene in teams and discuss what forensic evidence they can get off the exhibits in their teams. The students will then retrieve evidence including swabbing. Testing body fluids for DNA using Kastle Maya kit and Hemasticks. Finding hidden finger-marks using fingerprint brushes and powders, retrieval of this evidence used by the real CSI's ultra violet light activity, footwear mark activity, packaging of evidence, using the same exhibit bags used by the police, documentation and report writing, using the same reports used by the real CSI's. Also interpretation of the lab results to help solve the crime. During the session DNA is covered so students can get a better understanding of it using actual hands on DNA experiments.
Team Building
While attending a forensic experience students will examine a mock crime scene. Burglary for primary school age and a murder for secondary school age (using a unique silicone body made at a famous film studios).
