The Pollution Solution - Sustainability and Air Quality Workshop

Big Wheel Theatre Company

School Workshop

trip icon 'The Pollution Solution' was originally commissioned by a London borough concerned about the the problem of air pollution in their area. They felt that there was a strong need to raise awareness and alert pupils to the issues surrounding air pollution.

'The Pollution Solution' begins by looking at the causes of global warming and air pollution. It goes on to show how our transport choices affect the World, Your Local Area and You, successfully demonstrating the problems whilst offering a variety of solutions that pupils can practice in their daily lives.

It sounds a bit serious and alarming but don’t worry we tackle these issues in our own unique, interactive and fun show biz style. We steer clear of doom and gloom and focus on the facts and the positive actions students can take themselves.

“A fantastic balance of education, entertainment and humour. The two presenters worked incredibly well together. All information was relevant to us. The children were kept engaged and enthusiastic at all times. We loved how they were included.”

Year 4 teacher, Richmond

Where we travel to

We can visit your school in: All UK Regions

What activities are available during this school workshop?

We use a variety of different formats where students are always actively involved.
- They become the contestants in the game show ‘You Rule’, which incorporates a scientific demonstration about the effects of climate change on planet earth.
- They sit back and enjoy our hilarious adverts that encourage walking and cycling.
- They take part in a whole group demonstration to show the huge impact of traffic in the local area and the dangerous pollutants it causes.
- They help create a show stopping finale featuring some young Vikings who find a way to train their pollutants!

Which curriculum topics do we cater for?

green tick Drama Workshop

We use drama and theatre skills to engage students in this workshop about air pollution and sustainable travel. Students are always actively involved in the story of the workshop and are encouraged to join in, perform and respond in a dramatic way. Teachers will see how easy it is to use simple drama techniques to create engagement in a serious topic, embed learning and make the experience memorable and fun.

Sustainable living Global warming

'The Pollution Solution' has become one of our most popular workshops as schools and local authorities become more concerned about the effects of global warming and air pollution on our communities.

The main focus of the workshop is on how our travel choices affect the quality of the air in the world and our local area. We cover the main pollutants, Nitrogen Dioxide, Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Water Vapor and particulates, where they come from and the role they play in global warming.

Students are challenged to think about how they can travel more sustainably in order to improve the air quality in their own communities.

green tick Environmental Geography Workshop

Sustainable living Global warming Climate change

In this workshop we talk demonstrate how global warming works and contributes to Climate Change. We talk about the main pollutants, Nitrogen Dioxide, Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Water Vapor and particulates, where they come from and the role they play in global warming.

Students are encouraged to think about how choosing a more sustainable way of traveling to school can improve air quality in their local area.

What size groups do we cater for?

Our audience maximum is 60 students.

People often ask for us to accommodate more but we find that when the audience is too big the overall learning experience for the students not as good. Our workshops are very interactive, students are encouraged to take part, speak out etc and it can become rather overwhelming when there are too many of them.

Access for visitors with disabilities

Yes of course - we work in a flexible way that allows for the easy adaptation of our sessions to students of all abilities.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

We have extensive experience working with a range of different needs and abilities with ages ranging from Early Years through to KS4, including much work in SEN and PRU settings, and all our actors thrive on the variety of audiences that we encounter.

Anything else?

Workshop duration:
KS1 - 45 mins,
KS2 - 60-75 minutes
We can present up to 4 workshops a day depending on your school timetable.
