Our Key Stage 1 workshop uses drama and roleplay to place your children in a 12th century castle. They experience life in the castle through hands-on crafts, including pottery, weaving, leatherworking and more. They will also learn to defend the castle using shields and long bows.

What activities are available during this educational workshop?

In the morning, your school hall becomes a mediaeval castle in the children’s minds. They will move free-flow among workstations to try mediaeval crafts necessary for castle life. Activities may include:

• Illumination
• Pie making
• Soap ball making
• Cresset lamp making
• Braiding
• The Wise Woman
• Leatherworking
• Pottery
• Candle making
• Weaving

The afternoon includes a mediaeval feast featuring stories and performances by the children.

Which Curriculum Subjects do you cater for?

Medieval

Medieval Society and Feudalism Castles

Visit a mediaeval castle without leaving your school hall. Your KS1 children will step back in time to 1144 and learn about the different features of a castle and daily life there. They will also learn about knights, royalty and how the castle can be defended against attack.

Historic Events Beyond Living Memory

Our workshop transports children 800 years into the past to explore the inner workings of a mediaeval castle. The children will learn why castles were built and how they were used. After experiencing life in mediaeval times, they can then compare living standards then to the standards of today.

What size groups do you cater for?

We can work with three classes (up to 90 children) at one time, provided the school hall is large enough.
