Why
book 'Life in Roman Britain Day' with Off the Page
Our Key Stage 2 workshop places the children in the action, using drama to turn your school hall into a Roman Fort. The children will imagine themselves as tradespeople supporting a Roman fort. They will try their hands at period crafts such as leatherworking, charm making, metalworking and more.
As the children work, they will be drip-fed information about Boudicca, the source of her anger, the response of the Roman Army and the destruction of three cities. They will experience life as it existed at the start of Britain’s Roman occupation.
In the afternoon, the children will (*spoilers*) celebrate Boudicca’s defeat with a feast, stories and performances. Or, we offer a “suitcase afternoon” for groups of up to 60 children. The children use clues in the luggage to determine who it belongs to and what they do.

What activities are available during this educational workshop?
Our Life in Roman Britain workshop recreates the experience of being in a Roman fort near Peterborough. We ask the children to imagine your school hall as that fort. They can explore the various trades that might have supported a fort and try their hands at those skills. The workstations may include:
• Wax tablet makers
• Scribes
• Charm makers
• Leatherworkers
• Metalworkers
• A bath house
• Mosaic makers
• Fresco painters
• Lamp workers
• Game makers
Schools may choose their afternoon activities:
• A feast afternoon – the children experience a Roman feast to celebrate the victory over Boudicca. Activities include stories and performances put on by the children. This activity is suitable for groups of any size and ability.
• A suitcase afternoon – the children explore bags and boxes lost during the rebellion. They must identify who the owner is and what their position might be based on the contents. This activity is a bit more challenging and is suitable for groups of up to 60 children.
Which Curriculum Subjects do you cater for?
Romans topics: Romanisation and ways of life, Roman Buildings, The Roman Army, Boudicca Rebellion.
Experience the Boudican Rebellion from a Roman perspective. Our Life in Roman Britain workshop places the children in a Roman fort in 61 CE. They will learn about Boudicca, the Roman Empire and events of the Boudican Rebellion while trying hands-on crafts from the time period.
What size groups do you cater for?
We can work with three classes (up to 90 children) at one time, provided the school hall is large enough. However, the suitcase afternoon is available only to groups of up to 60 children.
Do you cater for visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
Please talk to us about your Special Educational Needs so we can accommodate your children’s requirements.
Who are Off the Page?
Off the Page presents history the way you wish you had learned it as a child. Our experienced teachers immerse your children in a topic to create an unforgettable learning experience. Our school workshops are no mere presentations with a bit of artefact handling – we build an atmosphere using authentic materials, allowing children to live the history through drama, roleplay and hands-on activities. The result is an understanding and enthusiasm for a topic that is difficult to create with books alone.
