Symphony of Support Workshop

Starshine Roots

School Workshop

trip icon Symphony of Support: Sound Therapy for Students with Special Needs. By incorporating sound therapy into your curriculum, you can expect a multitude of benefits, including improved sensory integration, enhanced communication skills, increased self-regulation, and overall wellbeing.

As someone who lives with disability - Fibromyalgia and ADHD - I am passionate about helping each student unlock their potential, having experienced the transformative impact of sound firsthand.

With my background in informal learning, I have developed and facilitated numerous workshops for special needs students, empowering them to explore and harness the power of sound. Through these workshops, students have experienced breakthroughs, expanded their horizons, and gained valuable life skills.

Where we travel to

We can visit your school in: South West, Wales

What activities are available during this school workshop?

꩜ Sound Bath with Singing Bowls ꩜
This creates a serene and calming atmosphere to help students reduce stress. Students who tend to be hyperactive can discover a newfound sense of calmness, while those seeking an energy boost can feel revitalised and invigorated.

꩜ Drumming ꩜
By listening and responding to drumming, students can explore rhythm, coordination, and self-expression. It can also stimulate movement, boost energy levels, and encourage social interaction.

꩜ Guided Imagery with Soundscapes ꩜
Using recorded soundscapes and guided imagery techniques, I can take students on a sensory journey. This can enhance creativity, visualisation skills, and emotional wellbeing.

꩜ Voicework and Vocal Toning ꩜
Through sounding and group vocal toning exercises, students can explore their vocal capabilities. This can help improve speech and language skills, self-expression, self-confidence, and sense of unity within the group.

꩜ Mindful Movement and Dance ꩜
Incorporating dance or movement activities alongside rhythmic soundscapes can encourage gross motor skills, coordination, and self-expression.

These activities can be tailored and modified based on the specific needs and abilities of the students you are working with.

Access for visitors with disabilities

Yes Please let us know more about your group and we will get back to you with more details about the suitability of what we offer.

Visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Yes Students will benefit from increased confidence, self-esteem, and healthy self-expression in various aspects of their lives.

Through sound therapy, students will understand the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and emotions. This will support them to embrace their true selves and accept their emotions, fostering self-awareness and acceptance. Students will recognise the impact of listening, breath and movement on different branches of the nervous system, helping them process emotions; achieving a sense of calm.

Improved memory, concentration, and learning abilities through the positive effects of sound, meditation, or mindful movement will be experienced by students. They will feel more creative and inspired, finding joy in expressing themselves through various creative outlets.

Students will learn practical techniques to reduce stress and maintain inner peace,
which they can apply anytime. Enhancing their listening skills, both to themselves and to others, as well as the ability to cultivate being present in the moment, reducing anxiety will be a benefit.

Who are Starshine Roots?

Sound therapy is my passion and I work with young people to support them to relax their minds and bodies. I draw upon both ancient practices and modern research into the effects of sound, rhythm and vibration, creating immersive experiences that encourage mindfulness, self-awareness and self-expression.

Having a sister with special needs has granted me insight and understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals with diverse abilities. As a qualified sound therapist, and with my background in Informal Learning, I bring not only professional expertise but also a personal connection to the special needs community, ensuring a compassionate and empathetic approach in my practice.

I have developed a holistic approach tailored to the unique needs of special needs students.
My activities are designed to create inclusive and nurturing environments that promote focus, engagement, and emotional well-being.

Reviews from Schools..

★★★★★
""It made me feel good that all the students on their own were very engaged with the experience. Ruth was very good and adapted the activities for everyone. It was a very beautiful surprise hearing all of the sounds. I wish students could have more opportunities for these sorts of experiences" - Warmley Park School, Bristol, Apr 2023"
