During lock down I have undertaken training in and around Covid-19 and Prevention of Infection. Humphs Histories will always fit into and adhere to each individual schools covid-19 guidelines.
Any workshops cancelled due to a Covid-19 issue will not be charged a cancellation fee as long as it is rebooked for a future date within the current school term.
During the day the children will spend a mixture of watching, listening and doing. Activities will include - the human time line of Britain, identifying the foods, grinding the grain, crushing the grapes, Latin phrases, painting the shields, run-around-game, The Roman quiz, examining the weapons and armour, meeting the Roman Legionnaire, shield battle tactics.
Through out the workshop there is reference to Archaeology and what as a society we can gain and learn from it.
Through out the day the children will be taken on a historical journey by the workshop leader who will be in dramatical character. There will also be times for the children themselves to get involved using drama as a medium.
Curriculum topics available: The Roman Conquest and Hadrians Wall, Romanisation and ways of life, Roman Buildings, The Roman Army, Our Roman Legacy, Boudicca Rebellion.
The whole day is based around the Romans in Britain and how they impacted on the landscape. There are various activities during the day that keep the children engaged which will enhance their learning. The workshop encourages the children to participate as much as possible.
The topics looked at are;
Fitting into the British Timeline
When and how did they arrive in Britannia.
What language did they speak
What skills did the bring with them
What items did they bring with them
What food did they eat, grow and bring here
What were the houses like
Who were their Gods
What legacy did they leave
The Roman soldier and his equipment
Curriculum topics available: Settlement and land use, Economic activity and trade, Natural resources.
Whilst looking at the Romans, the workshop discusses where they came from, where they conquered, how they ruled citizens and what natural resources were important to them.
Curriculum topics available: Painting.
During the workshop the children will paint their own individual shield which will then be used later during the shield battle tactic activity. A follow up lesson can be used by the teacher to finish off the shield design.
The workshop day can be designed to cater for up to 30, 60 or 90 children (3 classes). Ideally the smaller the group the more activities the children will be able to partake in and also the more information to be shared.
Where ever possible we always try to cater for all children, we trust the school to supervise where they think supervision is required.
Although the workshop comes with a template, it is very flexible and can be adapted to fit in with the school and its needs and time restraints.
Ideally the workshop will require use of the main hall for some if not all of the day. When the weather permits some activities can take place outside.
A session involving painting will take place during this workshop.
The children are encouraged to come dressed in costume for the day.
I believe that learning should be fun and strive to combine these two factors within the workshop session together with my two main passions, love of history and theatre. There is nothing more rewarding than the passing of knowledge on to young people who are really enjoying themselves and learning at the same time.
I always aim to deliver a high quality of education.
In addition to my History degree I have been involved in the amateur theatre world all of my life, both on and off stage. I currently direct local musical and pantomime societies and incorporate this skill within ‘Humph’s Histories’ by ensuring plenty of interaction with the young people.
"“Humph's Histories is a must for any school. You get bespoke curriculum planning- unique to your school and setting. The day was interactive, bringing History to life. The children loved learning about life in a different historical time and have retained knowledge to apply to their follow up work. I highly recommend Humph's Histories to any school if you want to engage pupils in History. High quality education at a very reasonable price! We can't wait for our next workshop!” Headteacher"

"Humph's Histories offer a great way of engaging & inspiring children in history . We used the day as an introductory 'hook' for our Roman topic and it was very successful. It offered a variety of interactive activities covering a range of history objectives. The children particularly enjoyed making their shields and then using them in battle formations.
Steve came in prior to the day & tailored the activities to suit our plans. Highly recommended! In fact, we have already booked the Egyptian & Viking days for other years groups.

"“What a FANTASTIC day!!! Humphs Histories Roman Workshop was humorous, inventive, engaging and inclusive for all 90 of our year 4 children. It was a fantastic step back through time, which had the children hooked from start to finish. Each child was ecstatic at painting and taking home their very own shields! The children spoke about it for days after. Humphs Histories really brought history to life and we will without a doubt be booking him again. Thank you so much.”"
