Whilst residentials still remain off limits we can offer your school a fabulous day trip with everything you would so on a residential except for the sleeping part - ask us about our "Dawn to Dusk" days.

Magdalen Farm has been offering flexible schools trips for many years. Based on a working organic farm our dedicated team of experienced tutors will guide you through a variety of activities tailored to suit your requirements.

The Farm includes a 2 acre vegetable garden with polytunnels so that we can demonstrate food growing all year round and no visit is complete without a trip to see our chickens, pigs, goats and not forgetting Jenny the Horse.

We have the River Axe running through the farm which is ideal for river studies or join us on our low ropes challenge - a great team building experience. Alternatively make pizzas in our cob ovens and smoothies using our blender bikes.

We have activities to suit everyone.

What activities are available during group visits?

trip icon

Here are a selection of our most popular activities. Contact us for further details or with a particular topic/theme.

"Hands on Farmers" - Experience life as a real farmer by carrying out valuable and fun day-to-day jobs on the farm, such as sowing seeds, harvesting vegetables, wheelbarrowing watering and animal feeding. We will visit the farm animals, learning about animal welfare and different farming practices. In the kitchen garden we can go on a taste tour, discuss pollination and look at how changing farming practices affect biodiversity on our farms.

"Survival in the Wild" - a chance for groups to experience tribal life, building their own shelters and lighting fires without matches. We will apply tribal face paints and enjoy a drink around the campfire.

"Eco-cooking" - What better way to learn about food than to pick your own fresh ingredients from our kitchen gardens. Choose between using our outdoor cob ovens to cook delicious pizzas or cooking on an open fire to create tasty omelettes. For residential visits, this option includes an activity about seasonality and food miles. For day trips/younger visitors it includes making scarecrows.

"Rivers & Streams" - Why not learn about rivers by standing in one? Magdalen has a beautiful, safe and shallow section of the River Axe where groups can safely wade in to enjoy a selection of fun activities such as: Dipping and ID, Scientific Study, Teddy Bear Raft Racing, River Haikus and River Terminology.

"Low Ropes Adventure Challenge" - Groups must tackle a series of apparatus up to one metre off the ground that act like puzzles. Effective teamwork and communication are vital in these activities that test leadership, the ability to give and follow instructions, trust, coordination, agility, and thinking outside the box. With an underlying focus on personal development and group dynamics, the challenge provides an action packed, creative and exciting experience you’ll talk about for weeks after!

For older students studying Geography, Biology or Environmental Science we can lead your groups on field work or reviewing particular topics.
