Team building and personal development are fundamentals to many of the programmes we run at Skern Lodge. Using a range of exercises and challenges we can bring these experiences to your classroom. Developing support, trust and collaboration are key elements of the exercises we choose and by providing a friendly and fun approach in our delivery we get full participation and positive results.
The North Devon coast has a history of wrecks and pirates and taking to the coastal path, it's easy to see why so many ships flounder upon its jagged rocks. Our tutors will help guide your pupils to take in the environment around them, help them to understand the sights, smells and sounds that help to describe where they are. Creating that first draft to take back into the classroom.
Outdoor activities offer a range of individual challenges that some traditional team sports don't offer. Many pupils excel at these individual activities, where they may not have done on the games field. Giving them a real positive boost and self confidence for other sporting endeavours. Whether it's climbing a wall, surfing a wave or journeying on a kayak, Skern Lodge has a range of activities to challenge any young person.
Team work and personal development are fundamental to many of the courses we offer here at Skern Lodge. Through practical exercises and challenges that foster support, trust and collaboration. Students are encouraged to look at their own performance and reflect on learning gained and possible future actions.
From campfires to shelter building, our instructors provide an ideal environment where young people can learn the practicalities of being able to survive in the wilderness.
Take to the water, either kayaking, rafting or surfing. Whether it's the first time on the water, or if your booking a series of sessions. Skern can provide a day or course that meets your aims and objectives.
When Hubba the Dane sailed into the Taw and Torridge Estuary in the late 9th Century, there began the history of the vikings on the North Devon coast. Our tutors will guide your students around the village of Appledore and provide stories and tales that bring this local viking history to life. Mixed with a mixture of outdoor activities this day will provide so much discussion when back in the classroom.
Westward Ho! isn't just famous for its exclamation mark. The coastal processes around Westward Ho! show a range of geological features including wave cut platforms, long shore drift and of course coastal erosion. Whether it's measuring pebbles on the ridge or the effects of coastal rock armour. Your pupils can gather a range of data that they can take back into the classroom to analyse and review.
There are so many subjects we can choose here, but lets look at an example:
Lets say your pupils decide to look at what is the nosiest part of the school. We can guide pupils to create a range of sampling, maybe a survey. They could take readings from a decibel reader. Then see if this changes throughout the day. Lots of data, and lots of potential. What do you think your class would like to look at?
Let us help your class set up it's own weather station, maybe look at infiltration rates and what are effecting these. We can discuss the water cycle and how the weather impacts upon this. These tutor lead sessions encourage children to understand fieldwork and collect data.
First we need your pupils to formulate a title, then identify a good hypothesis and the ideal method to answer that question. Then, it's out into the field using the appropriate equipment in an accurate and reliable way. Then it's back in doors to present the data followed by evaluation. We round off the session with one final question of reflection - could we have done better.
Yes We certainly can. Please use the form below to let us know your group's specific SEN requirements and we will get back to you with more information on how we can tailor our learning experience for your children.
Skern Lodge has been operating since 1976, providing residential experiences to both primary and secondary schools. For many years we have also travelled out to schools either providing a pre or post residential activity day to ensure that participants gain the most from their experiences.
We'll put together a carefully designed programme to promote the behaviours that are normally evidenced through a residential. We can link your session with a current theme or topic you're working on or maybe you would like to focus on the transition up to a new school or college. Topic days at Skern Lodge have been very successful and we can easily transfer this to your school grounds.
We develop a range of practical, fun and challenging tasks and activities for the children to get active and enthused about. Teamwork, challenge and creating a supportive environment are just some of the learning outcomes focused upon during your session time.
