Why book Learn By Design for educational workshops into your school?

Age range: Year 3-6 (KS2)
Duration: 2 hours to 2.5 hours
Numbers: 1 class (approx. 30)
Requirements: hall with at least 20 metres of clear floor space
Children are given an engineering challenge to construct as much railway track as possible, using K’Nex pieces. In this competitive challenge, teams are scored based on the number of stations reached and the additional challenges that they choose to complete along the way! This interactive and entertaining workshop demonstrates the importance of teamwork, problem solving, prioritisation and communication, whilst embedding maths, English, science, careers and other curriculum topics through imaginative problems designed to suit all learning styles.

Which Curriculum Subjects do you cater for?

Curriculum topics available: Laws and the justice system.

Exploring engineering challenges whilst offering young people to think about the world around them and the principles that relate back to the live problems.

Curriculum topics available: Story telling.

This session provides a storytelling opportunity that allows the children to imagine life scenarios and relate these back to the rail challenge and how they can approach and problem solve.

Curriculum topics available: Logic and Problem Solving.

Scoring systems within the challenge encourage young people to add up their and competing teams results.

The ability to use engineering skills in order to build the track by using the K'Nex pieces facilitates design principles whilst encouraging creative thinking.

The wildlife that exists within a landscape may be a topic of discussion as a result of encouraging young people to think about the area on which a railway track is built.

Curriculum topics available: Materials and recycling, Plastic pollution, Sustainable living, Renewable Engergy, Climate change, Conservation.

The Environmental Geography and landscape will be a topic of discussion as a result of encouraging young people to think about the area on which a railway track is built.

Archaeology may be discussed within this session via thoughts and thinking around landscape pathways that are paved as a result of track creation.

Landscapes and their geology may be a topic of discussion as a result of encouraging young people to think about the landscape on which a railway track is built.
