Throughout the day, the children will take part in the following activities:
- Introduction: The Schoolmaster will give an overview of Victorian Britain and of the British Empire to the children in the form of a presentation/assembly.
- The Victorian Classroom: The Schoolmaster will take a class and show the children what school was like in Victorian times. Strict discipline and good listening skills are essential to avoid being punished!
- Life in Victorian Britain: Rather than concentrate on the obvious person associated with the Victorian Era, this session looks at the average Victorian. The Schoolmaster presents to the children an informative look at how people lived and worked in these times.
- Victorian Choices: Using an interactive Powerpoint, the children step back in time and imagine what they would have done, given the choices that Victorian people had to make in their lives. Every child starts off with the same 'stats', and after each choice they make, their stats will alter. Will they climb the social classes and become an elite figure of society? Or will they remain in the lower classes, working hard just to try and survive?
- Toys of the Victorian Age: In this session, children will investigate a range of toys from the time - this might have to involve actually playing with them? Right?
- Archaeological Dig: In soil trays, the children will sift through the dirt to find real artefacts. Can they identify: 1. What they are? 2. What they were used for? 3. If they're Victorian?
- Final Review: After a fun-filled, hands-on day, the children will get to a chance to relax and reflect on the day. What do they think about Victorian times? Would they have wanted to live back then? How would their life be different from what it is like today?
Historic Workshops travel to schools nationwide, to provide highly-engaging, hands-on learning that is second to none. We pride ourselves in providing a professional service that aims to deliver each workshop to as many children as possible (unlike some other workshop providers, we also provide teacher-led sessions for the children to continue their hands-on learning whilst we are delivering a session).
Most schools we visit re-book us for the following year, or for other workshops that we provide. Since our beginning in 2016, we have seen a huge rise in popularity year on year, which is a true testament to the quality and value of the workshops. In Autumn and Spring 2017-18 and Autumn 2018-19, we were fully-booked 5 days a week! It is essential that you book as early as possible to avoid missing out!
