Hyett Education are specialists in STEM and our mission is to ignite a passion for STEM subjects. We are Royal Air Force STEM Education Partners and deliver STEM workshops all over the UK on their behalf.

Our lead consultant, Antony S Hyett, is a qualified teacher and Computing specialist that has worked at a local authority as an Education Technology Consultant with a track record of delivering ICT Mark status.

Our STEM lead, Mark Guy, is a semi-retired aeronautical chief engineer responsible for designing the actuation systems you'll find on most common commercial and military aircraft.

We have delivered STEM/Computing workshops to thousands of children across the UK and have had glowing reviews from children and teachers after every single one. We're also trusted by the Royal Air Force to deliver educational STEM programmes across the UK on their behalf and have earned the status of RAF STEM Education Partners.

The children that take part in STEMbotics will be given opportunities to learn new skills and problem-solve through a series of age-appropriate competition challenges. All of our sessions achieve Computing curriculum objectives in each key-stage.

In KS1 and Lower KS2 we use LEGO WeDo 2.0 to introduce students to instructional robotic builds and entry-level block coding. Students progress to designing and coding their own robots and competing against class mates in different challenges.

In Upper KS2 and KS3 we use LEGO EV3 Mindstorms. Our tasks range from instructional builds to designing and building their own robots to complete various engineering challenges. Students will learn to code touch sensors, colour sensors, gyro sensors and supersonic sensors and apply the technology to their designs to carry out tasks.

Which Curriculum Subjects do you cater for?

Curriculum topics available: Logic and Problem Solving, Measurement.

Students will have to apply logic, as well as numeracy skills when coding various elements. For example, when coding a robot to turn, students will have to apply their knowledge and understanding of angles in order to find accurate solutions.

Curriculum topics available: Robotics, Coding, Information and Communications Technology, Algorythms and data.

The basis of our robotics sessions is to create programmable devices. Students will learn the basics of block coding and eventually code with variables, sensors, loops and conditional statements. These aspects are taught and explained to the children by a Computing specialist in ways that are easy to understand and apply.

Curriculum topics available: Forces and magnets, Electricity and circuits, Forces.

Many of our robotics challenges have cross-curricular links (i.e. building Lunar and Mars rovers). The challenges linked to these robot designs require students to grasp scientific concepts in physics in order to achieve their goals. Students will learn about the impact of friction by experimenting with tyre widths and treads, for example.

Curriculum topics available: Mechanics and engineering, Electronics.

Students will be presented with a problem, to which they must conceptualise, design and engineer a solution using the robotics kit available to them. They will experiment, test, problem-solve, adapt and get creative in order to achieve the desired outcome.

What activities are available during group visits?

All of our STEMbotics robotics and coding sessions can be adapted to your school's curriculum. We've delivered sessions to thousands of students across many contexts. Tell us your topic and we'll make sure we deliver with cross-curricular links.

We can deliver stand alone workshops as half-days, full days or ongoing programmes that develop students' skills over time.

What size groups do you cater for?

We can have up to 60 students working together at one time for EV3 robotics, and up to 30 at one time with WeDo. Our sessions can be adapted to suit up to 120 students per day for WeDo (KS1/KS2) and up to 240 students per day with EV3 (UKS2/KS3/KS4).

Do you offer on-site classroom facilities?

No, we come to you! With LEGO WeDo 2.0 activites we can work quite easily in your classroom. Our LEGO EV3 Mindstorms sessions require more space due to our competition floor mats used for programming challenges - our preference in these sessions is to access the school hall.

Is there first aid on site?

We hold current Level 3 Paediatric Emergency First Aid qualifications and will be on hand to provide assistance, if required.

Do you cater for visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
