The Deep

School Trips

Home / Yorkshire / East Riding of Yorkshire

The Deep is one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world and is home to a whopping 5000 animals including Europe’s only pair of green sawfish, spectacular sharks, turtles, a colony of Gentoo penguins and hundreds of tropical fish. Located in Hull, just off the main A63, The Deep offers easy access from all over Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Our team of qualified teachers and marine biologists deliver all the workshops and presentations which are linked to the national curriculum. Our ethos is that learning should be fun, ensuring that The Deep offers a quality and engaging 'learning outside the classroom' experience.

Why book The Deep for School Trips and Educational Visits?

trip icon

Every year, The Deep welcomes over 30,000 primary and secondary pupils to our purpose built Learning Centre. An educational visit consists of an educational workshop relevant to your pupils' Key Stage, time in The Deep visitor attraction, secure storage baskets for personal items and a choice of indoor or outdoor reserved lunch area if required.

We have a colony of Gentoo Penguins, who have taken up residence in the Kingdom of Ice, and are delighted to say that we will are the only aquarium in the North of England to have these beautiful animals. Our teachers have created a range of new ‘penguin themed’ workshops, encompassing topics such as threats to their habitat, climate change, ocean acidification, food chains and animal biology.

Workshops, presentations and hands-on activities are delivered to groups from pre-school pupils to post sixteen by our team of experienced in house teachers. We cover a wide selection of topics including Science, Art, Geography, English, Citizenship, Maths and for older students Marketing, Customer Care and Travel and Tourism.

Let your students enjoy a unique and memorable experience as you travel from the beginning of time and into the future. We tell the story of the world's oceans and major rivers, encompassing animals who live in salt and fresh water.

The Deep is well catered for visitors with disabilities and additional needs. The attraction has been awarded Gold in the National Enjoy England Awards - Access for All category and in 2019 was awarded England's Best Accessible loo! The Deep is based on three levels all of which are accessible by lift. The route, which you will take around the attraction, is gently sloped and accessible for wheelchair users. There is limited seating available within the exhibition. Our qualified Learning Centre team are available to discuss the most appropriate learning sessions for special needs groups. It is possible, with sufficient notice, to modify most learning sessions to meet individual requirements. Visitors who wish to discuss their requirements further should call 01482 381000 (option 3) Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm.

Do you cater for visitors with Special Educational Needs (SEN)?

Yes. We have a close relationship with a local special school who provides us with advice on how to best deliver our services. We have a range of material suitable for those of different abilities, including facilities for those with sight and hearing loss, physical challenges and those who struggle to concentrate for long periods of time.

Anything else?

The Deep becomes particularly busy in the summer term, with little availability after April each year. Expect to get a quieter experience if your class can visit us in the Autumn or Spring term.

In the Autumn and Spring terms we offer Mackerel Mondays for those in years 6-9, giving students the chance to dissect a mackerel. Students will perform a simulated post mortem of a mackerel fish. Looking at external features, body organs, stomach content, life processes and cause of death. Students will enjoy this multi-sensory activity which covers working scientifically and compares human and fish anatomy. KS3 pupils will use a scalpel.

There are a wide variety of marine themed gifts are available from our Deepartment Store with items from as little as 25p. For schools wishing to bypass the shop we can arrange goody bags, cuddly soft penguins or sticker activity books. Please order before your visit.
